Field day (family edition)

The kid's don't get to have all the fun this summer! This has been a rough year Momma. Some of us are essential workers then coming home to home school, some are working from from while being a teacher at the same time.. its been rough but we made it! We decided to have a field day with our children since they didn't get to have one at school this year.

I'm not a huge fan of field day, yes you read that right. Between other kids not listening, and being out in the sun from 9-3pm- no thank you ha. Doing this with my family at home and maybe some cocktails is better for me. I'm usually very extra and try to make a theme, personalized signs and pretty much waste time making everything perfect instead of enjoying myself...my sister told me to relax and have fun so she took care of the signs for me, it was awesome.

My tips for a successful field day are:

  1. Stay hydrated ( have a cooler filled with plenty of water and drinks)

  2. Stay cool ( keep the kids happy with popsicles)

  3. Have hats and sunscreen

  4. Wear comfy shoes and clothes ( but still be cute ha)

  5. Be organized ( have your games planned out, setup before everyone gets there)

  6. Have a referee keep track of the scores

  7. Have a shaded area

Our field day was family style so we did team vs team. My family vs my sisters family, we had our parents come to keep track of the scores and laugh at us, haha. It was such a fun day with the family I'm glad we did it, I hope you all enjoy!

There are A LOT of games that you can play for field day. I feel like everyone has their favorites from our school days. I will lay out which games we played and how you can play them with your family and friends. I literally went to the dollar store and spent less than $25 for everything. The items you will need are

  1. Eggs (or fake eggs, small ping pong balls etc)

  2. Plastic spoons

  3. Plates

  4. Long sticks

  5. Beach balls

  6. Sponges

  7. Buckets

  8. Hula hoops

  9. Plastic cups

  10. Long stick (for limbo)

  11. Jump ropes

Hula Hoop pass- Form a line of players, all holding hands. One person at the beginning of the line takes the hoop and goes up and over their entire body to pass to the next person, this continues down to the end of the line then back up to the beginning. Which ever team finishes first, wins. If at anytime someone disconnects arms, the team must restart. We played 3 rounds of this.

Paper plate tennis- Glue long popsicle sticks to the back of paper plates ( to use as your rackets) Blow up a beach ball to use as your ball. Which ever team lets the ball hit the ground is out. We Played about 10 rounds of this game. Tons of fun!

Egg race - Setup two teams. Designate a start point and a middle ground to turn around. Line up your racers at the starting line with a egg ( or plastic ball ) on a spoon in their mouth, race down to the middle ground to turn around and come back to tag your next player, if you drop the egg you have to restart over again. We played about 4 rounds of this game, it was hilarious.

Pass the water - Split up into two teams and form a line (everyone gets a empty up). Fill up a bucket with water to put at the beginning of the line and another empty bucket at the end of the line. The first player will dip their cup in the water to fill it up, then pass the water backward into the next players cup all the way down the line to the last person, they will then empty their cup into the bucket. Which ever team fills their bucket up first, wins!

Sponge toss- Split up into two teams and form a line. Fill up a bucket with water to put at the beginning of the line and another empty bucket at the end of the line. The first player will dip their sponge in the water to soak up as much water as they can, then pass the water to the next player all the way down the line to the last person, they will then squeeze their sponge into the bucket. Which ever team fills their bucket up first, wins!

Limbo - Everyone knows how to play Limbo, right? ha

Baseball - Everyone knows how to play baseball, right? haha We played with a baby bat and a beach ball so we didn't hit any windows. Tons of fun, and a workout ha!

Relay Race- For this game you can pretty much just make up your own obstacle course. We divided up into two teams. The first player picked up their beach ball ran down to the middle and turned into a circle twice, laid the ball into the small hula hoop, picked up the jump rope and jumped 3 times, turned around and did everything again until they got back to the starting line and handed the ball off to the next team player to complete. Which ever teams finishes first, wins.

At the end of the day we finished with popsicles and s'mores by the fire. We had a blast, can't wait to do it again!
